Adelaide Connected Case Study: Choosing Adelaide to Create Global Impact

William Van Ausdal’s story highlights how Adelaide is attracting people who want to make a tangible impact on some of the world’s biggest challenges.

Featured on Season 5 of Adelaide Connected, William shares his journey from the United States to South Australia and the experiences that led him to build a career focused on sustainability, climate action and creating positive change. Today, as Head of Sustainability at Flinders University, he is helping drive initiatives that reduce environmental impact while strengthening the university’s reputation as a global leader in sustainability.

Like many people who relocate internationally, William’s move involved stepping away from familiar networks and environments to embrace new opportunities. Having worked across multiple sectors, including government, healthcare, consulting and technology, he was drawn to Adelaide by the opportunity to contribute to meaningful, long-term outcomes in a city that is increasingly recognised for innovation, sustainability and quality of life.

In the podcast, William reflects on Adelaide’s unique ability to combine professional opportunity with accessibility and lifestyle. Rather than feeling constrained by a smaller city, he found a community where collaboration is encouraged, ideas can gain traction quickly and individuals have the opportunity to influence meaningful change.

That environment has enabled William to help develop and deliver upon an ambitious sustainability strategy, including renewable energy, decarbonisation projects, and circular economy initiatives. Guided by his sustainability leadership, Flinders University became the first organisation globally to achieve a Gold rating under the latest version of the internationally recognised STARS sustainability framework and achieved the Top Performer in Energy and Climate globally in the 2025 Sustainable Campus Index.

Beyond his professional achievements, William speaks about the value of community, connection, and purpose.

“Adelaide offers the opportunity to be part of a city that is not only growing, but actively shaping its future through innovation, education and sustainability leadership,” he reflects.

His story reflects an increasingly important narrative for South Australia: attracting talented people who want to contribute to something bigger than themselves. Through their skills, ideas and leadership, people like William are helping position Adelaide as a city where global challenges can be addressed at a local level.
