Adelaide Connected Case Study | From Canada to Adelaide: why are global innovators choosing South Australia?

Adelaide is increasingly becoming a destination for global talent, and the journey of JD Sheard is a powerful example of why.

Originally from Canada, JD built a successful international career across technology, investment and business growth, working throughout North America, Europe and the UK. But despite the scale and pace of those global markets, he was drawn to Adelaide for something different: the chance to be part of a city where innovation, lifestyle and community genuinely intersect.

In Season 4 of Adelaide Connected, JD speaks candidly about moving to Adelaide in 2021 through the Australian Global Talent Visa program. Like many newcomers, the transition came with challenges including navigating COVID-19 restrictions that were in place at the time, finding a home, rebuilding networks from scratch, navigating a new business ecosystem and adapting to a smaller, relationship-driven city after years in much larger international markets.

But those challenges quickly became opportunities. Today, JD is helping shape Adelaide’s growing innovation and investment ecosystem, helping and investing in start-ups through his work with Eastend Ventures, Virtca Capital and several technology and not-for-profit organisations.

JD reflects on how Adelaide’s collaborative culture stood out almost immediately. Rather than competing for attention in an overcrowded market, he found a city where people are willing to open doors, share ideas and genuinely support one another’s success. That sense of accessibility and connectedness helped him establish deep relationships across the innovation, startup and investment sectors.

JD also praises the lifestyle advantages Adelaide offers, from reduced commute times and affordability to access to nature, culture and community. For JD, Adelaide provided something increasingly rare in global cities: the ability to pursue ambitious professional goals while still maintaining balance, wellbeing and meaningful personal connections.

“For us, my wife and I, it’s just the liveability. We just absolutely fell in love with it here, everything we love to do is here and honestly, we couldn’t dream of living anywhere else,” JD says.

His story underlines the broader mission of Adelaide Connected, providing opportunities for people who have recently moved or relocated back to Adelaide to meet, connect and showcase the value they bring to our state’s future.
